Requirements

Only lighting needed for this will be a flashlight and possibly a second flashlight to make scene more dynamic and make it look better. There is power but will not be used. No need of clearing the are since I think this look makes it better. Makes it seem more abandoned and overall makes it fit the theme more rather than a clean well lit up area.

Problems

Problems I might face is space. I might run into some problems fitting everything up there although I think I can make it work with the equipment I have which is this smaller tripod that can be attached to almost everything. Only props needed will be costumes and apart from that the equipment.

Resolve

If there are any problems, I can always film them another day. If something goes wrong, I can always come back to the location and shoot unlimited shots. I feel like that wont be needed unless the first take just doesn’t look right and there are things I can fix then another shoot will take place.

image.png

Only requirements for this scene will be the mini tripod to secure it to the mirror of the car. Might do a try take just standing in the driveaway to see how to place the camera to have the best view shot. I want to have the character as well as the background and the side of the car to really see the scenery as that is the whole point of the shot. To bring something new into the video something not really seen in amateur work music videos.

A problem I might come across will be being scared to se the camera for the actual shot which might resolve in me using my phone for that shot. Damaging equipment will be something I will not want to be doing. I would feel better using my phone. I can also then not worry about it breaking. If this mirror thing doesn't work I could always just make the person hold the camera outside the window on a mini tripod.

If there are any problems such as the shot not looking right or the tripod not holding on properly I can just re shoot the shot and make it look better and if it is the other problem about the mini tripod not holding up then I can use things such as tape and such to just make it more secure since I really want to have that shot in my music video.

image.png

I built this construction to hold the camera and also attach to the body of the character to make it seem like it is this expensive equipment that tracks the movements and moves along to the actor whilst it is just a wood construction moved physically by the actor himself . There will be a flashlight at the end of it as well as extra flashlights flashing at the character just to add something to the scene. It will be this low shot adding to different shots.

Only problems that I could face here would be the shots not looking the best. If that is the case I can always either get rid of the shot or get ideas of what to fix from the previous takes. Another problem I could face but probably won’t be the construction failing such as breaking. It is built to sturdy standard so no worry there.

If any problems do appear I will just re shoot the scene learning from previous mistakes. If the construction fails I can always just build another or fix the existing one. If not that I can also just find a alternative to the scene. There is a lot of things I could do to film this scene.

Planned Actions  - Lyrics

When filming a music video there are these lyrics in songs that are remembered by everyone and are sometimes classified as the ones that everyone knows which make the song the song it is. From my video from the song Overseas  there are a few easily remembered ones that the action done for in the music video is just needed to show off what the lyric says. Also since there is no lip syncing my music video I knew that actions of the character need to be over exaggerated to make the viewer understand that the character isn't doing random things to the camera and that they are actually performing to the song. Some of these lyrics are especially the chorus that is really easy to remember usually.

London, Paris, Amsterdam, yeah, I'm overseas
image.png

Naming all these different Capitals Cities he is implying that he is Overseas since the artists is from the US. When the words that say '' I'm Overseas'' the character puts their hand in a signal that is implying that they are travelling overseas. You cannot really see the action since it happens so quickly. In the music video you can perfectly see the action when the video starts. I think having these key moments cleary stated through action since there is no lip sync it could help the viewer understand what is going on and what the lyrics actually say.

image.png
She gon' suck my soul out me, yeah, she on her knees

When the song says '' Yeah, She on her knees'' the character is showing that through the hands. There isn't a lot more to say about this line its quite easy to understand and the action is just implying that they are'' on their knees'' signaling down.

12 ask me, "What's that smell?" Yeah, weed

In this lyric they say that ''12 ask me'' For those who don't know ''12'' is a say for the police translating the lyric they mean that the police is asking them. '' What's that smell?'' since weed has a strong and a very specific smell since why they could smell it and are asking him and the artists replies ''Yeah Weed'' and that action is shown in the music video by signaling with their hands that they are smoking blunt for those who don't know it is ''Weed''

image.png
image.png
The last bitch I broke up with slit her wrist

''The last Bitch I broke up with'' is the first part of the lyric and translating that what Ken Carson means is that when he says ''Bitch'' he mean his last girlfriend saying that they broke up which is relevant to the second part of the lyric which is ''Slit her wrists'' saying that Ken has caused that through the break up and that she couldn't take it anymore slitting her wrists. In the Music Video the character to show off the lyric by signaling the slit in the wrists with a quick move. Thinking about it know there could of been a prop to do that shot but it is quite easy to understand.

Props and Costumes

image.png

This characters main thing will be this mask and the scarf around the head. I want this character to feel mysterious and scary. This mask was hand made by me and I think it really look good. The inspiration for this mask came from my mind really there wasn't a real inspiration but my mind and creativity. The costume will be all black to fit the aesthetic.

The girl will be having this white dress on her with her her down to really represent the ''Ring Girl'' as much as possible. To have this mysterious and scary feel as well as the other character.

Story Board

image.png

I created a story board to show off my idea and also to be able to imagine my shots more in depth. After filming and editing my whole project I know that the drawing inst the best but the idea is there and I understand it really well. I decided that to go with a digital story board to really convey the aesthetic and idea of my music video to further show off the detail. I used the same shots as my drawn story board to show that the drawings really inspired the shots I wanted to do.

Set Design

This set came to my mind whilst setting up a different scene and I was like why not try including the masks since the main character will be wearing one. I thought of this scene as the main character being surrounded by the masks making him ''overwhelmed'' whilst the performance is happening. I felt like it would be a cool addition to the music video just needs to be done more correctly. What I will do to make sure this turns out better in the final music video is work on the set. I will need to make it a lot bigger than what it already was. When there is more space there are more options of filming and you are not limited to one or two angles. Not like this scene will need a lot of angles since this will be a cut through scene which will be just performance with no advanced editing in it.  Update on the scene I have now acquired the needed equipment to create the scene to its full potential with a larger background availability and better lighting. This will allow me to have a lot more angles and a lot more space to work around the character. The test I did before has one angle and is boring. One angle not clear visibility nothing interesting going on. Only thing that made the thing better was the effect. Although watching it back I am not sure about doing this exact effects. Might try something different with the new footage that I will be getting. Better footage means better opportunity to create something good. Looking back at this set design I did it looked better in my mind compared to the image on the right. With the set up it will look better.

Pool scene

The photo on the left is from a music video called MÅ‚ody Manson. In this scene we can see the main character in a body of water of some sort. Which is a really interesting scene not used very often in music videos at least to my knowledge. I was really interested how this was done. If maybe After effects were used to create this environment or maybe they have filmed at an actual l body of water.  I have reached out to the director as well as the editors to confirm this since I really wanted to know how it was done to be able to recreate it in my own music video. As I said at the start I thought it was a 3D environment designed for this scene but turns out it was a very nicely lit pool in which the main character had to go in clothed and with a motion tracking drone they were able to get this shot. This scene is actually followed by a very cool transition and the camera goes into the water showing off the whole body. This transition was done through VFX since I don't think they out the camera into the water for a 1 second transition.

What my idea for the attic scene was to have this dark abandonment feel to it to make it more scary.  I feel like the abandonment feel will make it fit my aesthetic  I really want to make it feel like the recording is old and filmed on a handycam from ages ago. The vhs filter will do just that. In the background of the video there will be the second character. The girl standing there linking it to the intro where it showed her origin. How she appeared there. I think it is a really cool concept of how the story will progress. I am planning on filming about 2 scenes here one with and one without the second actor. I think that having this contrast will make it better and more interesting. A variety of shots will be used such as close ups and medium shots and static shots to avoid having the same thing over and over which will just bore out the viewer. The lighting will be through two flashlight one on the side lighting the whole scene and the second one will be hand held from behind the camera flashing around making the scene more dynamic.

Train Scene

train.JPG
gfd.JPG
trainy.JPG

I plan on recreating this scene from this music video where the person is sitting on a roof of the car driving through a futuristic city. Taking inspiration from this I want to recreate it to a rather darker standard. Such as replacing the city with a forest and the sports car with a train. I think this would fit the aesthetic well and made it more interesting to watch. Instead of sitting I am also planning on standing and having effects such as shaking and snow pouring down. Making is stand out might as well make it my main scene to have as a backup if nothing else from my footages catches my eye. This wont be a hard shot to shoot since it is just green screen which isn't very hard and has a lot of potential since you can change it to however you like it.  I was going to do this shot hand held but then realised the background will be still whilst the camera moves. So I will have to edit the background as well. If I don't use this effect It will mean that it either did not meet the standard I would want it to have and didn't fit the overall theme compared to the rest of the music video.

Idea and Concept

( Idea 1 taken from proposal)

My first idea consists of a Performance type Music Video with narrative involved having variety of different locations each giving the similar vibe to the theme of the song. I am planning on having about 5 locations locations featured through out the music video to give a variety of backgrounds but all in this moody dark theme. I want it all dark with flashing lights through out the music video to create that '''crazy'' feeling. I am planning on constructing a few sets myself  at home so that I am able to control the mood with lighting and such. For my music video I have chosen a more aggressive and quick tempo song which will reflect on the locations and lighting. My techniques will help to show that my music video is in that genre as I will be having quick cuts which will make it match the tempo of the song. Most of the song will be  a performance type but with this satanic feel where no face will be not shown it will be full of masks and face covers so the mystery and creepy feel is there. I will be filming all kinds of shots. It all just depends on the location and where each kind of shot would fit in. The location I am going with are all at night or in a dark environment. I want to shoots scenes at home since that is when I have the most control of what I am planning on doing. I can really show my idea through set design. Being able to place every little detail makes the scene so much better since you can decide what the main focus will be rather than finding a location somewhere and having to go with it as it is. First location will be in the attic. I will want to begin the attic location with lighting up a match and seeing the girl appear in front of him. And him throwing the match up and wanting to do a 3D close up of the match being thrown up. And the scene beginning with a big shake and all flights starting to flash. I feel like this location will fit the ''scary'' theme a lot. I am planning on having this character that is really inspired by the ''The Ring'' girl. I will want her to be included in all the locations. Appearing and disappearing all over the place sometimes popping in front of the camera. I really want to do  sometimes in the video where the camera is set as the girl. The vision of what she sees when looking at the performer and such with hair covering the camera. That theme of the girl will follow with every location and in the end I am planning on doing a either end scene or a part of a performance scene where the location is outside and the girl in a cage trying to escape making the cage shake and stuff whilst the performer is holding the cage so that she doesn't escape. I will need to decide on that. Another location  I am thinking about is a forest scene. In the deep of the forest walking through trees with a lantern whilst the girl appears behind the trees and such whilst performance happens but then I will also want to include a scene within that scene where the music cuts out and all you see is the performers vision whilst he is walking through the forest. His vision being all blurry and such. Hearing him walking on the leaves and branches with deep breathing searching for her. And then he hears something turns around she's not there he turn around again and she is standing right in front of him and that is where it cuts out this scene and returns the sound and cuts to a different location. I would want to include that sequence somewhere in the middle of the song. Another location I will be wanting to do is this dark corridor/room where the light is flashing and performance is happening whilst the girl again appears and disappears and I said that will be the more important theme of the music video. Another location which cant really be called a location more of like this type of shot from down below. I am planning of the person standing in the attic looking through the entry whilst the camera is at the bottom looking up. This location/shot will also include the girl since that is kind of the motive of this music video. Props will be used for most of the locations and shots to enhance the scene I really want to use masks for the performer for all of them since that will add that creepiness and mystery of why is the girl chasing him and why doesn't she like him. Stuff such as lanterns to just make the scene make sense and would also need fake blood for a scene or two. Another important prop will be jewellery I will be wanting a lot of crosses to feature through out the video. That will range from 3D objects of crosses to jewellery and much more. For the sets I will will be creating I am wanting to this dark room/corridor to make it a creepy place with light flashing. Flashing lights will be used in all locations. I will make both of them disappear at movements and sometimes just leaving the girl or the perfumer just all depends on how I am planning on editing it. For my VFX I am planning of doing quite a lot of quick cuts and flashes to make it more dynamic whilst making it scary. I feel like this idea has so much potential with the right execution it will be really good. I will be using After Effects to make my transitions and add a variety of effects such as flashes and 3d transitions and objects. Just making the whole thing more interesting than it already it. I am wanting to really make sure that I don't go over the top with the effects since that will ruin the overall vibe. Only add effects that fit the theme. My colour pallet I want to be all black combined with grey and white. I really don't want no bright colours apart from the fire. That will feature in the forest scene from the lantern or possibly in other scenes to spice it up.

When to Write a Music Video Treatment? Treatments are written and given to producers, directors as well as all the pre production documents to make it easy to visualise the music video and help with the creation. Why is a music video treatment useful?  music video treatment is a communication tool for creative vision helping everyone on set not just you. Stick to the treatment combined with rest documents to keep a good work flow. If you are not keen on understanding a idea it is helpful if you listen to the song multiple times over to get a sense of the idea. Some people may need this other might not. Think of the treatment process as something that  even with a limited budget, you can create a professional music video treatment. This is basically a outline for the rest.
