Evaluation

Starting off with my proposal and early stages before the whole FMP time came I already had some ideas of what I could possibly do. I was going to team up with someone but in the end before the FMP even started I went solo due to some reasons. When the FMP time actually started I was ready to go. When it got to starting my proposal I knew exactly what I was gonna talk about. In my rationale I spoke about some of my ideas as well as reflections from last years project and also what I would want to do for this years FMP. I talked about the hard and soft skills I learned through out creating a music video last year and earlier this year. My future and goals for this were featured and I think I achieved them successfully. Next thing I did was talk about all my different inspirations I had before going further on with my project. The inspiration was mainly underground music and typically people from the record label called ''Opium''. Mainly there were 3 artists that inspired me the most and had the most influence on me and my music taste as well as the overall music video project idea. The main 3 artists were Ken Carson , Playboi Carti and Destroy Lonely. Their music changed my music taste as well as the way I dress and since this was the way my clothing style was heading I might as well make my music video this and I stuck with that Idea and it turned out for the good. After talking about all my inspirations and their music videos and what I love about them and definitely will be including in my project the next thing was my ideas. My first idea was the one I decided to go with since I had so much detail and already planned stuff out. The overall idea of the little girl appearing in my video from ''The Ring'' was followed by watching a horror film the conjuring. I wanted to create something in the feeling of ''horror'' I wanted something scary with that feeling of mystery behind it. That is where the idea of a horror type music video came from. The rest was just something that came along as I thought of the scenes. Each scene came up as I finished the one before. The ideas just kept rolling in and I loved it. In the end I wrote 3 ideas all basically different from one another. All had different inspirations but all were in this mystery as well as scary feeling but not all performance since I did not mind on what type of video it is. I always love creating something unique. Next thing after all my 3 ideas were done and a little summary written down I went onto my Target Audience. The target audience was really the part I care about I want my project to reach the right people and all my tests such as a questionnaire helped me understand who it is that really will want to see the video and what type of video they would want to see. The action research was something that I really tried but is seen in more detail later on in my research. In this action research I have done some editing processes as well as cinematography that I would like to use. I played around with some overlays and zooms as well as flashes  and POV's but in the end I don't think anything apart from the colour grade made it into the final cut. Rest of my proposal is really just talking about different roles that I will be doing and what will be needed of me to finish the project. I also talked about some links to YouTube videos and websites that will help me along my journey with stuff such as effects and camera settings.

Moving onto my research it helped me tons. This stage really helped me not only visualise the idea more but also help me of developing the idea further. My research started with fully developing and analysing 5 music videos in full detail to gain every little bit of information and the inspiration I could gain from music those music videos. The videos I chose to analyse all had something I liked about them and these factors ranged from the whole idea and the directing side of the video to the colour grade and ratio. I pointed out everything I liked about these and the ideas. I took something from all the videos. From one of them I took the overall cinematography and from others I got inspired by the aspect ratio of the video which inspired me to film it the same way and have the same look. This other video made me like the Colour Grade on it and that inspired me for that looked but I had to experiment with it and decided on something else rather than this dark look I went with full exposure look in the end. Next thing on my research that helped me tons was analysis on editors and directors. Especially Cole Bennett who is actually both, I have huge inspiration to be just like him. From his mood on set and working style to the editing styles and ideas for all these different music video that he has filmed it is all just amazing how he can do everything. My favourite thing to do related to music videos and overall media is defiantly watching behind the scenes of Lyrical Lemonade which is Cole Bennett's brand. The thought process if Cole is just something you are born with. What really helped me from Cole Bennett was the process he does things in and also how he handles problems on set. His chill atmosphere is something I did and it really helped with making the video in the end much better. Getting frustrated when stuff doesn't work is something that everyone should avoid. Anger never helps. Being calm about everything makes the project and filming flow smoother. Moving onto the next thing on my research was a little addition of a visual board. A collective of gif's and pictures that helped me fully visualize the style of video and the look I will be recreating. A little thing that does wonders. The action research was something that I really tried on and wanted to have it done perfectly. I attached everything such as screen shots and explanations on how some things were done and explained the shots. The edited action research was done to high quality which I am proud of but in the end not everything was used. But I don't see that as a waste I see that as improvement to my project since trying those scenes and then editing my video I saw what fit and what didn't. For example I really loved the cage scene. It looked amazing and had a lot of potential to be in my video but in the end I decided that it don't match the flow well enough. Same goes for the teleportation scene. It was really well done and edited really nicely but it just did not match my whole flow of my music video. Next thing on my research was Set Design since a lot of my scenes were filmed on a location that was adjusted to filming those exact shots. This helped me visualise through test what I will be needing for my final shoot. The test were really useful and helped me get the props needed to really make the scene perfect and look amazing. Whilst doing all this to get the perfect idea of some shots I went to further prove and research my points to as even messaging the editors of some of those and gaining information from them to see how a shot was filmed or edited. Most of them did not respond but the ones that did I included in photos near it.

Talking about all my planning everything that I planned really went well and I had no problems. If anything the planning helped me with everything to have everything on time and have it ready to work with straight away with no problems on set. Having done all the planning helped make the filming process way quicker than if I done none planning. One part of planning which was really good was the shot list as well as the story board. The shot list helped me follow everything I needed to film although in the end not every shot was actually used in the music video. But the shots that were used thanks to the shot list It helped me figure out the order and type of shots I needed to film at each location to maximize my productivity. The story board help me visualise the shots further with more detail and the type of shots that will be filmed.  Moving onto production everything went smoothly I didn't really have any problems apart from the first few days going to waste. The filming I have done on those days went to the bin since when I started to try to edit it at school all my files corrupted and I had to refilm everything that I already filmed but like Cole Bennett I kept my composure and was able to just re film everything that got lost. If anything it helped me make the shots better the 2nd time they were filmed. Apart from that one incident moving on I didn't have any major problems unless we count stuff such as having everything ready and misplacing a important prop to the scene and having to hold everything until it was found. This happened a few times with the mask the main character was wearing. The mask was actually hand made so it was a 1 of 1. But the little things I wouldn't count as problems more like little mistakes that could be fixed right away. My production went really smoothly the shots were filmed well and the ones that were not used were also filmed well even though there was no need to them. All my shots and scenes were filmed with schedule and nothing was late and nothing was needing a retake since it all looked really good the first time filming it. I wouldn't know if they were filmed so well so I decided that on every scene and location I will take many takes on each switching something up to have a variety to switch between.

Getting onto Post Production It also went really smoothly. First thing I did was place all my main footages and main location into the timeline and placed them all on top of another whilst putting all the extra b-roll and other types of footage to the right. I always choose one main scene as a base layer so that I always have something to cut back to. I placed all the main scenes above each other and the soundtrack of the song underneath them all. Looking only at the top footage and synchronizing it with the soundtrack I go one by one cutting all the moments I like and getting rid of stuff I don't think would work. Doing that with every piece of footage you have until only the base layer is left. By then you technically have a music video with scenes cut and everything synchronized but it is not that easy if you really want to get the best from your footage. Now that everything is cut I always go back and re watch this at least 20 times not even joking. Going back checking other options checking every possibility. This process usually takes really long and is called elimination stage since you are basically removing stuff and choosing between one or the other. After this long process is done and you are happy with what your video looks like ( I took about 2 days choosing the exact way I want it to look.) Moving onto effects and this is where your creative mind has the ability to do what ever you want with the footage. You can really do about anything. I decided to go with a few simple effects since I really loved the way my video look. Colour grading can come before or after the effects that is up to you and your work flow. I decided to go first colour grace then effects. I started off with my green night vision effect to change the attic scenes a little since there was quite a few of them. Next effect I did was this little echo effect that basically is a ghost trail I have everything explained on my production page but these are just two of many.

Having to deal with problems I haven't had a lot of that to do my whole project went smoothly. No TECHNICAL  problems occurred apart from that one at the start of editing where I had to re film my scenes but I took that strongly and calmly and re filmed my scenes better than before. With MANAGEMENT nothing bad happened with no big problems maybe one thing came across which was which was being burnt out of filming due to filming everyday but that could easily be fixed my taking more days to film. Talking about EMOTIONAL  problems there were also none of those. I learned from Cole Bennett to take things on set calm and not overexaggerate these problems. Overall I think I successfully met the brief. With great work on my behalf of directing and editing the whole project. Being solo on these project can be hard but having done my practice I did a really good job learning from mistakes from last year.
